The Chicago Hardy fig (Ficus carica) is a highly reliable, cold-tolerant cultivar ideal for cooler climates (USDA zones 6-10), known for producing heavy crops of small-to-medium, purple-bronze figs with sweet, jammy red flesh. It is self-pollinating and grows rapidly in sun, often dying back in harsh winters to regrow from the roots.

Key Characteristics
Hardiness: Stems are hardy to 10°F (-12°C), and roots can survive down to -10°F (-23°C), making it suitable for northern climates with protection.
Fruit: Medium-sized, mahogany-purple skin with sweet, honey-flavored pulp.
Production: Highly productive, bearing fruit early in the season on both new and old wood.
Growth Habit: Typically grows 10-15 feet tall and 9-12 feet wide, but can be kept smaller through pruning.
Usage: Excellent for containers, patios, or in-ground planting in sun-exposed spots.

Care Requirements
Light: Full sun is best (6+ hours per day).
Soil: Thrives in well-drained, fertile soil. It will not tolerate standing water.
Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish, then maintain moderate moisture.
Winter Care: In cold climates, apply heavy mulch around the root zone for winter protection.
Container Growing: Potted plants can be moved indoors or kept in a sheltered area during dormancy
